Barry Herring Photography

Barry Herring is a photographer who has lived in BC for 35 years. In the last couple of years he has started to look more critically at the influence of humans on both urban and rural landscapes. His current interest in hand coloring black and white images to provide soft nuances of tone has opened a new channel of expression. Quite often the coloring is done on prints that have been developed from paper negatives in a traditional wet darkroom.

The process of pushing a paper negative to produce very high contrast eliminates the detail and superfluous, leaving only what light (not necessarily the photographer) considers essential. This also has opened a parallel engagement with digital imaging in his lightroom and the vast opportunities that process provides. There is still, however, the magic of seeing an image slowly emerging in a tray of developer for the first time since it was conceived in the camera.
