Brenda Calhoun is an award winning Vancouver Island artist who works in acrylics and watercolours. She has studied drawing and painting at North Island College with instructors Lorna Gibson and Chris Wooten, and has studied with Island artists Heather Lang, Dave Harrison, Saskia King, and Karen Martin, as well as participating in various workshops by Federation of Canadian Artists signature members Neil Boyle,SFCA; Marilyn Timms, SFCA; Donna Baspaly, SFCA; Don Farrell, SFCA, and Bob Sheridan, AFCA.
Brenda paints still lifes, florals, and tranquil scenes in acrylics and watercolours. Her paintings are an expression of her love of colour and light. She is especially intrigued by still life arrangements which include glass or shiny surfaces with strong light and shadow. This contrast of strong light and dark accents is what attracts her to tranquil water scenes.
Brenda believes art is an expression of the soul. A quote from Martha Graham best describes how she feels about her artwork and that of others artists. "There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique." Creativity expresses the human spirit, and through her paintings Brenda hopes to share her creativity, her spirit, and her love of painting.
Brenda is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a member of the Comox Valley Community Arts Council, Nanaimo Art Gallery, Comox Valley Art Gallery and the Pearl Ellis Gallery. She currently paints and shows with the Brushworks group in Comox, and the Halbe Hall artists in Black Creek, and shows her work with the Federation of Canadian Artists - Comox Valley Chapter. She has joined a group of local artists who show and sell their original works at their two annual Originals Only Fine Art Shows. One is at the Comox Marina on the 2nd weekend in August, and the other is at the Comox Recreation Centre on the last weekend in November. Her paintings are owned by collectors across Canada.
