Conservation holidays are a new concept to many Canadians but they are quickly gaining popularity as an affordable and inspirational way to vacation. Gone are the days of lounging on the beach. People are looking for adventure and educational getaways, and TLC The Land Conservancy of British Columbia’s Conservation Holidays are the perfect ticket.

Wildwood forest, located on Vancouver Island, near Ladysmith has been stewarded by Merv Wilkinson since 1938. Harvesting less than the annual growth of wood has been the guiding principle upon which Merv Wilkinson based the management of Wildwood. The intent was to have a consistent flow of timber for use, while keeping the stand volume relatively stable. Over time Merv started including ecological criteria, such as leaving snags for woodpeckers into his stewardship. Merv’s work at Wildwood has been an important addition to the ecoforestry movement, and he has received the Order of BC and the Order of Canada because of his dedication to the environment.

The primary goal of this holiday is to help repair and improve some infrastructures around Merv’s house and to assist in maintaining his garden. There will be an engineer on site to assist us. Site manager Jay Rastogi will also be providing a full tour of the property to educate participants about Wildwood’s significance and the importance of Merv’s legacy.

A soft grass clearing in the woods will serve as our campsite. We will be camping and cooking outdoors and there will be the opportunity to take walks in the woods and to swim in the lake.

Come out this summer and marvel at the wonder that is Wildwood and help give back a little to a place and a person who have done so much to inspire better land stewardship practices.
