The Pacific Brant Carving and Art Show will be held April 14 and 15 at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. This major wildlife art show and woodcarving competition is produced by the Vancouver Island Woodcarvers Club, in co-operation with the Oceanside Carving Club and Cowichan Valley Carving Club.
The show consists of three events: the Pacific Brant Carving Show (woodcarvings and woodturnings), the Pacific Northwest Fish Carving Competition (fish carvings) and the Pacific Brant Art and Photography Show (wildlife art). Silent Auctions and a Saturday evening wine and cheese event will be held as part of the event..
For the last two decades the Vancouver Island Woodcarvers Club has been responsible for organizing this event in the Parksville/Qualicum region of the island as part of the Brant Festival. This year, the show is being held in the Victoria area, offering an opportunity for residents and visitors to the south island to view some of the finest woodcarvings and wildlife art in western Canada. While most carvings are entered for the competition, many are available for sale directly from the carvers. And a number of carvings and art will be available in the silent auctions. Artists taking part in the show will have many originals and prints for sale as well as a good selection of art cards.
This woodcarving show has been a consistently popular island event that helps raise environmental awareness by showcasing artwork inspired by wildfowl, fish and other natural subjects. Carvers come from Western Canada and the Northwest United States to compete for awards in various skill levels from novice through expert. This year, 2011 Ward World Champion Saskatchewan carver Cam Merkle will be the guest instructor for a three-day pre-show seminar on carving a Stellers Jay; as well, world renowned artist Mark Hobson will give a three day painting seminar on painting wildlife with acrylics. Visit the website to register.
As part of the event, the Pacific Brant Art and Photography Show & Sale will feature artworks by some of Vancouver Island’s best-known wildlife artists including: Sue Coleman, Mark Hobson, Morgan Warren, Linda Heslop; photographers Stuart Clarke, Allan Cornall, Dave Hutchison and Neil Fatin as well as sculptors Craig Benson and Paul Harder.
The show is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and April 15 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the Bodine Hall at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney. A Saturday evening wine and cheese event will be held from 7pm to 9:30pm. and will include a live auction. Admission is $7. Sponsors for the show include the Times-Colonist, The Market on Yates/Millstream, and “A” Channel News who support the Vancouver Island Woodcarvers Club, a registered non-profit society.
