General information: Bob McKay, woodturner

These two are typical of the large functional salad bowls that I turn from Big Leaf Maple (left) and Arbutus (Pacific madrone). I begin with a single large chunk of wood salvaged from Salt Spring Island, and use common woodturning methods to produce a carefully seasoned, detailed and finished bowl that will provide many years of satisfying service.

Typical side views, Maple (left) and Red Cedar, show foot, side profile and lip details.

These platters of Arbutus (madrone), left, and Yellow Cedar are good examples of the way I try to capitalize on natural features.

Arbutus burl from a weathered stump. The ragged edge is the surface of the wood just as I found it under the bark.
