General information: Octavia Guesthouse, Paul Tikkanen

Hostel-style budget accommodation in commercial salmon fisherman's "empty nest" family home and acreage, RV and tenting campsites. I would be pleased to have you amongst guests in my modest home. My crew and I are avid backpackers, travelers just like yourselves, and have come home to roost. We are your friends that you have not had the opportunity to meet.

Lots of pictures about our area, boat and crew:

All ages welcome!

Dorm style rooms. Shared full bathroom upstairs, and partial bathroom downstairs.

Pets are welcome - there is lots of room on the acreage for them to romp, but they must always stay outside the building.

We will provide them a shelter made for them. Please call or write to give idea of size or type of pet. Many of our guests are allergic to pet hair and their well-being must be considered.

Do you have a larger pet like a horse? We have lots of grass, although no shelter or barn. Many people ride horses around here. There is a commercial barn, tack store nearby.

You can start the mountain ATV or dirtbike trails, mountain bike, and Elphinstone Mountain hiking trails right beside our house.

Famous Sprockids mountain bike network "sidewinder" entrance nearby.

Need a mission? Come and be part of ours!

You can teach your elderly or grandkids at your own pace each day.

No family? Living alone? Join our family! Our crew! With an elderly parent? Single mom with kids? Bring them!

b @ b rates, winter 2010: (can change without notice.)

Pay for six nights, seventh free. $25/night(tax included) $150/week(tax included.)

There is an excellent recreational centre, just 2km from our place, very new, worthy of any large city. Ice rink, exercise rooms, daycare, all kinds of things. Just built this year 2008. You will be amazed! Our village pool is a short distance from there too. There is lots to do from home base.

We have a library in Gibsons,(half-hour free internet use per day, $4/hr over) medical clinic, town indoor pool close by, and full service hospital about ten km away in village of Sechelt, our sister town. Sechelt has an excellent new pool, and an older ice rink.

Many people visit from other parts of Canada for a week or two, and move here to live a month later.

Our climate is one of the warmest in the country. Palm trees actually grow in many people's yards. A hardy type of palm, but none the less palms. Why keep shoveling snow where you live? Move here and leave the cold?

You can rent an RV space with us and live in it while searching for real estate.

Tenting available $15/night/two people(tax included) $70/week Use of hostel amenities included. One person $10/night, $50/week, hostel amenities included.
Tenting farther into bush, with no amenities, $5/night/two persons. $3/night one person. You must practice strict no-trace camping, no campfires of any kind permitted. It is the dry season. These areas are patrolled. If you wish to camp for free, the whole mountain is just a few hundred feet away, provincial forest.

R.V. Sites: $25.00 per night or $150.00 per week
* Monthly rates are available upon request
Camping farther in the acreage, no services, $5/night, or $150/month. You must be self-contained and practice no-trace camping. The spots are very private, and fairly easy to access. But it is west coast rainforest, not forest lawn!

Only water and 15 amp electricity, wireless internet available,(included in rate) unit must be otherwise self-contained. Sani-station about 1-1/2 km away. We have some room for motorhomes, but mostly for camper sized units as our trails are narrow. Lots of privacy though. Many sites are private enough for nude suntanning. Naturists welcome!

What is cohousing ?
(Our future plans, and we welcome inquiries, and partners)

Cohousing Neighbourhoods...
Some people call them a return to the best of small-town communities. Others say they are like a traditional village or the close-knit neighbourhood where they grew up, while futurists call them an altogether new response to social, economic and environmental challenges of the 21st century. Each holds a piece of the truth. Cohousing is a concept that came to North America in 1988 from Denmark where it emerged over 25 years ago. It describes neighbourhoods that combine the autonomy of private dwellings with the advantages of shared resources and community living.

Residents usually own their individual homes, which are clustered around a "common house" with shared amenities. These amenities may include a kitchen and dining room, children's playroom, workshops, guest rooms, home office support, arts and crafts area, laundry and more. Each home is self-sufficient with a complete kitchen, but resident-cooked dinners are often available at the common house for those who wish to participate. In some communities participants will join a cooking team once or twice a month - then sit and enjoy meals cooked by fellow residents the remaining evenings of that month.

Belong to a hiking, biking, singles, church, whatever group? Polygamous family? 10% discount for four or more persons.

Retired missionary? minister? rabbi? mullah? imam? 50% discount!! (up to four in your party at one time) (All faiths welcome! We trot the trails in harmony!) Depends on vacancy.

Please note: We are a guesthouse for travelers, not a shelter!

You must provide some kind of proof of travel. We do not take in locals as our place would be always full, and we would not be able to provide budget accommodation to travelers.

If you are looking for a shelter, try this link:

http://www.shelternetbc.ca/Resources.htm

Many of our guests are keen outdoors people, leading or trying to lead healthy lifestyles. No smoking indoors, or drunkeness is permitted. Zero tolerance for illicit drugs of any kind. We are slowly making our property completely alcohol free, including campers and trailers, so if you wish to indulge, there are other parks and campgrounds. Try "Langdale Heights rv park" or Creekside rv campground. If you break any of our few rules, you will be asked to leave.

You will be sharing our home with us, and other people in a group setting, and are expected to be considerate of everyone else at all times.

Check-out time 11:00 am daily,

Check-in time 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. each day.

Night-time doors locked 10:00 pm.

Key provided for refundable $25 deposit. There is no curfew, but you must respect other guests sleeping if returning late at night.

We are a small operation, and have to have these limits.
Do you have any interest in helping with the hostel?

Campground? Trails? Any experience in accommodation, tourism industry, in any country? Do you like gardening?

We need and welcome volunteers, 25% discount available for your stay then. This place is westcoast rainforest, and constant trimming the trails is needed to keep things open. Everything grows all year round.

Speak Hebrew? Willing to teach on a casual basis? You have free accommodation for as long as you wish to stay. Including any partner or family. You must purchase and cook your own food. We may have a kosher section of kitchen.

Many of our visitors have expressed interest in learning new languages, especially Hebrew. Our hostel will provide a fun setting for any teacher. You will have the time of your life, with our improv teaching methods. Several of our salmon boat crew-members are ESL teachers, Hannah, Ruth, Miriam, but may or may not be on hand. (they live in other areas usually)

Your kitchen all ready and equipped. You can use everything whenever you like. Free coffee, tea, toast, and some dry foods are available. We generally have a "free" cupboard, where travelers leave non perishable food they are not able to take with them.

We also have a large pressure cooker for canning fish, berry juice maker,(lots and lots of blackberries out right now) outside stainless tables for cleaning fish. All kinds of flatware, pots and pans for taking on hikes, day trips.

If you want to smoke your salmon, we can show you how and you can do it on site. We can show you how to clean, dress, and fillet your fish. A fish-cleaning station is provided outside with knives and water.

Eating area. Seats about eight. Other places available, especially outside.
Please note:
we are in the midst of renovating our rooms, and sites, and building more, and there is at this point much clutter around. You will fit in no problem, but if you wish for posh accommodation, perhaps one of our fine motels in the village is more appropriate.

If you have any special needs, our crew can go and purchase things for you, if you phone ahead. No need to load your pack-sacks with things that are available here, at your new home. Travel light!

Quiet places to sit and meditate, read etc. Many such areas, as we make them.

We have on hand a small amount of equipment and gear for disabled people. Crutches, walkers, and such. five hand driven wheelchairs.

We are working on making our grounds friendly for disabled people. If traveling light, leave yours at home, and use ours.

If you have any such equipment not being used, we would welcome
any donations with much thanks. A couple of old electric scooters would help our guests very much. Condition of things do not matter, as our crew is very handy in repairing everything...we are fishers remember?

We accept donations of any kind of camping equipment too, gratefully. Come and camp and leave whatever you can part with, for use for future campers. Our goal: camping affordable for everyone!

Have a kayak? You can use it in Gibsons harbour and then leave it overnight on the deck of our commercial boat. No need to haul it out each night. Take it into the water the next day. You should bring a chain and lock though.

Local wildlife that visit( now and then, unpredictable) our yard are: a family of deer, three resident raccoons, blue herons, a variety of small birds. Black bears may appear in summer months. We request food and trash is properly stored, in sealed containers so not to attract them. This is very important in our area. They may or not be on hand. We have one outdoor cat that patrol the grounds.

Wireless internet is available for anyone on our property, rooms, included in camping/hostel fee. You have to bring your own computer or laptop though.

Two mountain bikes available for rent, only for street use though, $10/day in addition to camping/hostel fee. We have a very good local bike shop who can help with more rentals.

Our trail system is complete for mountain bike use now. You are welcome to bring any units you have, and use them while you stay in our hostel or campground for free.

Have an unused but servicable bike you can donate? Feel free it will have a good home, and be lovingly cared for.
An electric scooter-bike shop in north vancouver will rent a scooter at $135/week. www.electriccoast.com
