British Columbia Travel Guide
The unofficial BC Travel & Tourism Guide
Located on the Shuswap River, the small community of Mara, population about 300, has a pleasant climate with abundant summer and winter recreational opportunities in the surrounding mountains and lakes.

Golfing and fishing are all-time favourites, while locals and visitors from all over the world enjoy the beautiful, broad stretch of sandy beach which is popular for swimming, boating, canoeing, water sports, and picnicking.

For a variety of recreational activities, visit Mara Provincial Park, a small 5.9-hectare park situated on the eastern shores of Mara Lake,
or take your canoe or rowboat on Rosemond Lake at the south end of Mara Lake. Mud Lake is popular with birdwatchers as the home of eagles, osprey, geese, swans, ducks, and loons. There is a lovely beach with picnic tables, toilet facilities, and tent-only camping.

In nearby Enderby, home to the Hunters Range Snowmobile Association, you will find the best snowmobiling in the area. Snowmobilers can also head to the Owlhead Mountain, northeast of Mara. For skiing and snowboarding, the dry powdery snow of Silver Star Provincial Recreation Area and Silver Star Downhill Resort, in the Shuswap Highlands, is a wonderful destination. The Houseboat Capital of Canada, Sicamous, is situated at the junction of the Shuswap and Mara Lakes in the Eagle Valley. Over three hundred houseboats are rented out annually from the marinas on Shuswap Lake.

The Shuswap is a haven for boaters and vacationers looking for a summer holiday on the water. Just a bit further south, the famous lake and wine country of the Okanagan Valley and Okanagan Lake stretches for over a hundred kilometres from Vernon to Penticton. Here you will find numerous parks and campsites set on the sunny lakeshore, desert lands and mountain woodlands.
