General information: David V. Smith

David Smith is originally from Vancouver, B.C., but has spent most of life in Victoria.
His years spent in the fishing and aerial mapping industries has given him a deep interest in all things marine and aeronautical.
His seven decades of life has brought him into contact with things that, once common, are becoming rare sights. E.g.,fishing boats down to their gunwales with cod, herring , and all the four major species of salmon; tugs boats towing vast booms of first growth logs; stacks of fresh cut lumber in down-town Victoria sawmills; naval and cargo ships being built at City locales, ie, James Bay, the upper inner harbour and Esquimalt.
His years spent as an aerial photographer allowed him to view our beatiful Province at a time when 'clear cuts' were
not in the public view as they now are!
By creating marine and aviation water-colour images, he attempts to re-create the feel of what once was as well as persuade those who view his work to appreciate the natural beauty of our sea and land mass; and as well, appreciate the genius of the human mind that can create the craft that follow the sea or fly the air!
South Beach, the subject of this work, is a small cove just south of Wikininish information centre, Vancouver Island.

This image is not of a specific vessel but rather is intended as a generic presentation of a type popular in the late 1800's.
Used mainly for coastal freighting.

Africa Mercy is one of several Hospital ships operated by the Mercy Ships organization. It is used as a floating hospital complete with operating rooms and clinical facilities which help to provide needed care to the poor of the third world.

The barque Linton was of British registry and was a beautiful example of early 20th century 'Tall Ship' construction.

The Stranraer flying boat was used during the early part of WW2 as a coastal patrol anti-submarine aircraft. Several were stationed on Canada's west coast operating out of Patricia Bay, Tofino, Holberg, Prince Rupert, Port Hardy, Masset and Jerico Beach.
