British Columbia Travel GuideThe unofficial BC Travel & Tourism Guide
Near the confluence of the Barriere and North Thompson Rivers in the Central North Thompson Valley, Barriere's residents love the natural lifestyle and close relationship to nature. It is a vast territory ripe for long horseback trail rides, afternoons of cross-country skiing, and has recently become more popular for snowmobiling due to uninterrupted space. Barriere does have more civilized sports such as golf, fishing, tennis, and leisure river boat rides. However, things can get a little crazier if travelers wish. Guests who are checking off life wonders from a list may be more interested in experiencing jet boating down river, whitewater river rafting, or even hiking with llamas with experienced guides.
From a cultural stand point, the North Thompson Museum which is housed in Barriere presents artifacts from; the Fennell Store, Indian crafts from the Chu Chua Reserve, household effects, and local pioneer artifacts from the days of fur trading, mining, the gold rush and much more.Population: 3,400+

History:
The Chu Chua Nations members were great river harvesters. They would place rocks and stone piles in the river bed to channel and trap the salmon. When the first French fur traders out of Europe arrived in the early 1800's they deemed this area the place of the river "barriere", which blocked transport for canoes through this neck of the river.
